History of YOOX - Net-a-Porter

Founded by Costas Constantinou and Italian born Federico Marchetti who came up with the concept for Yoox in 1999. The idea was to sell high end fashion at affordable prices on the internet. Yoox name is derived from the Y and X chromosomes and the two OO are for the binary nature of internet coding. So man, women and technology meets designer fashion creating Yoox. In 2000 they secured the funding (€4.5m) from Elserino Piol a venture capitalist. This got Yoox the internet based fashion store for clothes and accessories started. It initially started off selling end-of-season and surplus designer stock. From names like Yves Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabanna, Armani and Stella McCartney. Even luxury brands need to sell off excess stock at discounted prices without ruining their high end reputations. A bit like TK Max but a bit more upmarket and online. Marchetti is now known as the man who put designer fashion on the internet. Like a Jeff Bezos of the internet fashion world. In 2015 Yoox merged with Net-a-Porter, well we say merge, Yoox bought out Net-a-Porter for an estimated £950 million. A rumoured under valued price in the eyes of founder Natalie Massenet. Like all mergers it created upheavals in the boardroom and Natalie Massenet left the e-commerce fashion company after the “merger”.
