A Little Bit About

History of The Body Shop

Founded by Anita Roddick an environmentalist and human rights campaigner. It all started at 22 Kensington Gardens Brighton on the south coast of England in 1976. The emphasis was on natural ingredients sourced in an ethical way that included no cosmetic testing on animals. They now have thousands of Body Shop stores in over 60 countries. Rather controversially Roddick sold The Body Shop in March 2006 to cosmetics behemoth L’Oréal for £652.3 million. Why was this slightly controversial, well L’Oréal is partly owned by Nestlé and they and L’Oréal continue to test ingredients on animals. After a 11 year tenure L’Oréal sold The Body Shop to Brazilian firm Natura in £884 million deal. Sadly Dame Anita Roddick died in 2007. Key person: Anita Roddick nee Anita Lucia Perella Year established: 1976 Location: Brighton
