Superdrug was founded in 1964 and opened its first store in Putney, London on 26 April 1966. Two more stores followed in Croydon and Streatham. The Goldstein brothers Peter and Ronald were responsible for their success when toiletry retailing was in its infancy. Peter Goldstein worked at Tesco’s has a junior buyer of toiletries. This gave him the insight and potential of buying and selling toiletries.

The brothers earned £70 million when in 1987 Woolworth’s Holdings (Kingfisher) bought Superdrug which turned out not to be as successful has it could of been.
In 2001, Superdrug was sold to a European chemist Kruidvat. Superdrug is now owned by Hutchison Whampoa (AS Watson Group) an Hong Kong based multinational conglomerate which also own Savers.
