A Little Bit About

History of Screwfix

The Screwfix story starts with Jon and Jenny Goddard-Watts from the West Country. They bought the Woodscrew Supply Company in 1981 and eventually added two other similar companies. Based in Yeovil Somerset they grew a reputation for selling quality products at good value prices. The early success and the basis for Screwfix’s future can be put down to the enthusiasm and passion shown by Mr and Mrs Goddard-Watts. At this time they were just a business selling screws. These days they are famed for a comprehensive catalogue of tools and DIY fittings but this started out as a single page mail order “catalogue” dedicated to the humble screw. Trade was brisk and the businesses were combined to create Screwfix Direct. The first Screwfix Direct catalogue came out in 1992 and growth continued.
Jon and Jenny Goddard-Watts two sons James and Mark became partners in the business bringing their own skills of logistics software and customer service links with the building trade. David Cox was also brought on board as chief executive in 1996 to add some professional management skills to the company. New purpose built premises were acquired for the growth and a move ensued to a Yeovil business park.
The business was eventually sold to the Kingfisher Group who also owned B&Q in July 1999 for £60million. In 2003 Mark Goddard-Watts established a similar company to Screwfix called Toolstation. This went on to be a big success and was sold to the building merchants Travis Perkins who own Wickes. The sale took part over two periods in 2008 and 2013 for £18million and £24million respectively. Screwfix is now the biggest multi channel retailer of hardware, trade tools and accessories in the UK.
