A Little Bit About

History of Majestic Wines

Founded originally by Sheldon Graner in 1980 Majestic Wine started life as Majestic Vinters in Harringay, North London and later opening another wine shop in Battersea. In mid 1981, the receivers were called in and Majestic’s assets were sold to investment banker Giles Clarke. As the chairmen he built Majestic up into a small national UK chain. It changed hands a few times and acquired other wine company’s notably Liquor Barn in the USA. Then in September 1991 a merger took place with Wizard Wines and the two brands became Majestic Wine. In April 2015 Majestic Wine bought a smaller online rival Naked Wines for £70m. This was looking to the future with Naked Wines being a wine merchant based on the internet. It’s a business model that’s been described as crowdfunding for winemaking via wine clubs and subscription services direct with vineyards. The founder of Naked Wine Rowan Gormley took over both companies as chief executive. Rowan Gormley used to be the CEO of Virgin Wines he was sacked when Laithwaites bought Virgin Wines in 2008. In keeping with the transition to be an online only wine retailer Majestic Wine sold its physical properties, warehouses and retail stores in August 2019 for close to £100m. The money would be used to clear its debt and focus on the Naked Wines brand solely online. The buyer was an American private equity firm called Fortress they plan to refurbish all the stores and carry on the Majestic brand.
