A Little About Marks and Spencer
Early History of M&S
Marks & Spencer started life in the Northern market town of Leeds. It was initially founded has a market stall in 1884 by Michael Marks a Russian born Polish refugee. Later in 1894 he was joined by Tom Spencer from Skipton Yorkshire. This new partnership was assisted with a loan of £5 by Isaac Jowitt Dewhirst who owned Dewhirst wholesale company where Tom Spencer worked as a senior cashier. The admin and accounting experience Tom Spencer brought to the collaboration coupled with Marks’s drive proved a recipe for success. When you see the pound shops up and down high streets today this is where M&S roots lie in the original penny bazaar. The slogan at the time was ‘don’t ask the price, it’s a penny’. The first market stall they run together was in Kirkgate Market Leeds where they focused on the penny bazaar model.
M&S Move to Manchester
Further stalls were opened across North West England and Marks built a warehouse on Derby Street Cheetham Hill Manchester a centre for textile in the UK. It was not long before Marks & Spencer transitioned from temporary market stalls to covered markets and more permanent shop premises. By the turn of the century they had 12 shop premises and 36 penny bazaar market stalls. The business was on a sound footing and established.
The sudden death of Michael Marks in 1907 was the start of a bit of in fighting for control of Marks & Spencer, Thomas Spencer had died previously in 1905. Simon Marks the idlest son of Michael Marks eventually became the chairmen in 1916 at the age of 28. He was assisted throughout his tenure by lifelong friend Israel Sieff later to become a Baron. In fact Simon and Sieff married each others sisters. Sieff became chairmen on the death of Simon in 1964.
The company continued to grow into an international and multi-channel retailer. M&S created many of the innovative ways we shop today that we take for granted. In recent years like lots of the old established department stores they have struggled in the face of competition with online shopping. This has resulted in many store closures and continued restructuring to keep up with the ever changing retail environment. Not bad for a penny bazaar
The Marks & Spencer brand is also known as Marks and Sparks and more often as M&S or even Mark’s.
