The History of Maplin Stores

A Little About

Maplin stores goes back to 1972 when it was co-founded by Roger and Sandra Allen and Doug Simmons out of the Allen’s spare bedroom in Rayleigh, Essex. Both Doug and Roger were geeky telephone engineers for the GPO at the time. It was initially a mail-order business originally called Maplin Electronic Supplies Ltd and sold electronic components to hobbyists. Demand increased and the first shop was opened in Westcliff-on-Sea in 1976. A reputation for quality components followed and the business grew into a UK wide chain of electronic stores. Maplin has been run in a haphazard way over the years and has been the subject of private equity takeovers. In 2018 Maplin went into administration, all the physical shops closed. It was eventually purchased and now developed as online business only.
