A Little About
History of John Moores mail-order catalogue
The catalogue company was established by John Moores and his brother Cecil. They ran the Liverpool based football pools company which started in 1923. This had already made John Moores a millionaire by the age of 35. The mail order shopping business was just another crack at it to see if he could do it again. The rapid growth was phenomenal within a few years the turn over was running into millions.
The first Littlewoods home shopping catalogue was published in May of 1932 with 168 pages. In years to come it would get thicker and grow to over 1000 pages. He even created a chain of Littlewoods department stores with the first opening in 1937 in the town of Blackpool. The was the start of home catalogue shopping that went on to dominate for decades.
On 25 September 1993 John Moores died at his home in Formby he was cremated 6 days later in Southport. He was made a CBE and knighted and had Liverpool University named after him. The business was passed to the Moores family which had become the biggest private company in Europe. Littlewoods was sold to the Barclay twins David and Frederick in 2002 for £750m financed by the bank HBOS.
Hard times were ahead for the Littlewoods catalogue with increased competition from rivals and the emergence of the Internet. The Barclay brothers merged their other acquired catalogues businesses with Littlewoods including Kays Catalogue, Marshall Ward and GUS. These all come under the brand of Shop Direct. Other mail order and catalogue business that became part of Shop Direct Group were Very, Additions Direct, Abound, Isme, K&Co and Woolworths website which now redirects to Very.co.uk the catalogue store owned by Shop Direct.
