A Little About JD

History of JD Sports

JD Sports was a joint venture between John Wardle and David Makin with investment from both their families.
The first store opened in Mossley a Pennine village on the outskirts of Manchester. It was called John David Sports and sold football terrace wear. It was a tiny shop where you could buy your Adidas Samba trainers and a Sergio Tacchini top for going to the match. The shop name was later changed to JD Sports with the opening of a store in Manchester’s Arndale Centre in 1981.
John and David are big Manchester City fans and regulars on the Kippax stand at Maine Road. Later after great success with JD Sports they came back to rescue Manchester City from financial ruin. John Wardle stood as City chairmen for a time and settled a very rocky time for Man City.
In May 2005 John Wardle and David Makin sold their stake in the JD Group for a reported £45 million to the Pentland Group.
