A Little About

History of Holiday Autos

Co-founded in 1988 by Clive Jacobs and Nick Stolberg, the initial seed for the idea of a car rental broker is in hot dispute between the pair. The business model was to provide a pre-bookable and pre-paid car hire product with a guarantee car rental price. Holiday Autos, became Britain’s if not the worlds leading car rental broker. Mr Stolberg left Holiday Autos in 1995 after 8 years selling his share for £6 million. Stolberg went on to run other business’s most of them ill fated. They included a boy band called Upside Down with a number of chart flops. Autos Abroad – Hire for Lower were a similar car hire brokerage company founded by Nick Stolberg which had a unfortunate end. Mr Jacobs went on to drive the business to much more greater success with ECI Ventures a private equity group. Acquiring along the way the comparison to Ricky Gervais’s character David Brent form the TV service the Office. This was in part down to a docusoap series Clive Jacobs took part in on BBC2. The online travel retailer Lastminute.com bought Holiday Autos in 2003 for £43 million. Clive Jacobs stayed on as executive deputy chairman overseeing the integration. HolidayAutos.com was acquired by Travelocity Global 2005 which is part of Sabre Holdings.

The biggest gripes and problems when stood at the mercy of a car hire booking desk. Fuel charges: Getting clarity on the fuel charges. The fuel policy is another avenue for the hire company to make more money out of the hirer. A common strategy is for the hire company to charge for a full tank of fuel whether its used or not. Its called full-to-empty you pay for a full tank of juice at an inflated price. The best option is full to full which means the car will come with a full tank and the hirer brings the car back with full tank. Insurance: The excess insurance hard sell. Lets clarify Collision Damage Waiver commonly referred to as (CDW) this is not an insurance. It’s an agreement the car hire company offers to waive costs in case the car is damaged in an accident or scratched. This only covers the car and you will be asked if you want to take this out at an additional charge. Pushy sales staff who will be on a commission will tell you your independent insurance is not valid, beware they will lie. Its not always necessary to take out these additional cost you could go with Direct Car Excess. If you hire on a regular basis they offer a annual policy that will cover these damage eventualities. If your unfortunate enough to sustain damage to the vehicle you can claim back the costs.
