A Little About
History of Go Outdoors
Go Outdoors was started by two unlikely chaps who left school at 16 with almost no qualifications to shout about.
Paul Caplan a dyslexic bankrupt who once lost his home in a failed business and climbing enthusiast John Graham who was living wherever he lay his sleeping bag. This would include bus shelters, barns and abandoned caravans. These guys are the deserving winners in this story, there’s hope for us all yet.
The business adventure starts its road in Sheffield. John Graham managed the well known CCC (Camping and Caravanning Centre) store. Paul Caplan was a regular customer. CCC Store was established in 1969 taking up a big plot on Bramhall Lane. Eventually moving to Hill Street Sheffield.
Getting together they organised a buyout of the store in 1998 with the help of a HSBC and private equity firm Yorkshire Fund Managers. Expansion and growth followed with over 50 stores opening nationwide. In 2016 JD Sports acquired Go Outdoors for £112 million. This earned the founders Paul Caplan and John Graham a personal financial windfall in the 10’s of millions. JD Sports shop is now the leader in the outdoor sports clothing and leisure market also owning Blacks and Millets.
