History of Decathlon

A European sporting retail behemoth, Decathlon was founded way back in 1976. The first store opened in the charming Northern French city of Lille at the border with Belgium. It started life as a small sporting goods store opened by Michel Leclercq, who’s family have a long history of retail in France. He is the cousin of Gerard Mulliez the head of the French retail empire that owns Auchan retail supermarkets and the Leroy Merlin DIY stores.
