Avon is a story of empowerment for women even though it was established by a man. It started at a time 1886 when women in the US did not have the right to vote. David H. McConnell was a traveling salesman trudging the streets of New York selling books. He gave free perfume samples as an incentive for the book sales. Noticing the avid interested in the perfume sparked the idea for Avon. He understood women have a natural instinct for social networking with other ladies coupled with a passion for beauty products. This encouraged McConnell to begin recruiting female sales reps who could work on a commission basis. David H. McConnell went into business with a California based partner. Initially called CPC The California Perfume Company, David McConnell set about building a network of women who could be their own bosses and earn a good living. Working from an office in Manhattan New York, McConnell blended the first perfumes himself. The first known Avon lady rep was a lady called Persis Foster Eames Albee a reputable and successful businesswoman in her own right. Mrs Albee created one of the first Avon products the Little Dot Perfume Set comprising of five floral perfume bottles in a box kit. It wasn’t until 1929 that Avon used their name on products. Avon now sells beauty and cosmetic products in more than 100 countries. The cosmetics company sold its USA business in 2016. It is now headquartered in London United Kingdom. Jan Zijderveld was made CEO in 2018 taking over from Sherilyn S. McCoy who will stay on as an adviser to the board.
