In the beginning Dorothy Perkins started out selling hosiery and underwear that was in 1909 during this time of their history they were called H. P. Newman. Although there is reference to it being call Ladies Hosiery and Underwear Limited. A rapid expansion followed and by 1919 they had twelve shops. One of the best sellers at this time were bargain blouses for 25 pence. At the start of the second world war 1939 the name was changed to Dorothy Perkins after a suggestion from the present director’s wife who must have been a keen gardener naming it after a vigorous rambling rose. They were now developing into a big high street presence with 75 trading shops. The swinging sixties were not a great fashion era for Dorothy Perkins often being out of step with the trends. Although the growth continued and in 1966, they opened their 250th clothing store and started using modern cash tills. The 70s followed with the opening of the biggest Dorothy Perkins store of all on Oxford Street in London. With lots of designer and celebrity collaborations along the years from Yasmin Le Bon to recent stars like Kim Kardashian.
